Shoplifting through My Eyes
I wasn’t thinking about the consequences, and I couldn’t resist the temptation, all I could think about was the end result which in the end was me being caught for shoplifting. At times it can seem so easy and harmless and you can find yourself making excuses like “it’s not a big deal” or “they have plenty and they won’t miss just one thing”. Both of these things may pop into your head before you choose to shoplift however what many fail to figure out is that shoplifting is a crime. Even the smallest things like a cheap candy bar effect businesses and it also gives them reason to believe that anyone could be stealing from them at any point and it isn’t fair for these owners. I learned with first-hand experience that the risk is not worth it and you CAN get caught which is why I am writing this to prove to anyone who may have or regularly steals.
From a young age you are taught to pay for any items that you would like to purchase, but as we get older we tend to get distracted from this rule and get greedy. That second that you get greedy is the second that you ignore the consequences. One may think that the only person being harmed is the person you are stealing from, but the reality is that your family is also affected. When I was caught for shoplifting all I could think about was the hurt that my family would feel as a result of my actions, and this is not a good feeling. I could feel the disappointment from my parents the moment I seen them, I know I was in the wrong and I didn’t want them to think that it was their fault. In my case I ended up losing a job that I had for 3 years as a part-time employee. When people see you as a thief it doesn’t make you feel good inside, you may know inside that you are a good individual however you cannot change what others think of you. I try to stay positive and forget what is behind me now so that I can move ahead into the future, but I won’t forget what has happened in the past. I had to learn the hard way that shoplifting is a crime and that many people were affected by my actions. My advice for anyone who is thinking about shoplifting would be to think about the consequences first, then think about what others may think if you get caught and lastly to do the right thing.
